Description
**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. This is certainly the most interesting bronze axe head from Luristan that I have seen! The blade is thin and narrow with a curved cutting edge and a cylindrical socket for hafting on a handle. What makes this axe head so unique is that the blade is incised with eyes, nostrils, and a long tongue that form a horse’s face. The horse is somewhat wild looking, as if panting for breath after an energetic gallop. The Luristans were semi-nomadic people who were skilled horsemen and fighters. This axe head is undoubtedly a special piece that celebrates their strong ties with horses that aided in their warrior lifestyles. This ornate blade may have been specifically created to be buried with a wealthy or elite person to bring to the afterlife. Further adding to this piece is a lovely dark and green patina. Size: 3.375" L x 1.75" H (8.6 cm x 4.4 cm)
Provenance: private Southern California collection, USA, bestowed 2006; ex-J. Malter collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired before 2006
