Description
Continental School, early 20th century. A pair of Louis XIV style oil on canvas wall panels, each having a shaped white and gilt frame with scrolling acanthine details, each panel painted with a central courting couple, accented with decorative rococo motifs, including floral swags, wreaths, and acanthine scrolls. Apparently unmarked. Framed approximately 70.25" x 23.375".
Condition
Wear commensurate with age and use. Seems to have been lined. Scattered areas of craquelure overall, with areas of loss and soiling. Seam to lower quadrant where canvases stitched together, appears to have been inpainted. Some soiling overall, with some areas of loss to edges, and some minor areas of loss to canvas at edges. Some minor scratching and surface abrasions, with some minor areas of possible inpainting. Frames with some losses, chips, and wear, with some seam separation. Paper backing has been torn and partially removed. No other visible signs of damage or repair.
