A wonderful Costa Rican jade celt of pale green hues, expertly string cut with a lively representation of a crocodile in profile with an upturned tail. Quite a spectacular form from an inherently beautiful stone! Perforated under neck and open between tail and body for suspension and/or attachment. Size: .875" W x 1.75" H (2.2 cm x 4.4 cm)

The Crocidilia order comprise of crocodiles, smaller alligators, and yet smaller caymans was very significant in Pre-Columbian mythology. The crocodile being the oldest (approximately 55 million years old) was understood as a crocodilian earth monster and is oftentimes shown giving rise to what was known as the World Tree. Partial to a watery habitat, the crocodile is also a metaphor for fertility.
