Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste/Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. Finely carved and string cut from a stunning piece of jade, a zoomorphic creature - perhaps representing a monkey or even an otter - presenting an endearing pose with hands meeting across the abdomen, crossed legs, and a cute-as-a- button facial expression connoting surprise or worship. In addition to its intriguing figural form, the inherent beauty of the jade is impressive with grassy yellow-green hues interspersed with chocolate brown inclusions on the front and blue-green hues on the back. Laterally perforated through the neck for suspension. Openwork between the legs may be used for attachment or upside down suspension as well. Size: .875" W x 2.875" H (2.2 cm x 7.3 cm)
