Roman Bronze Attachment - Lioness Holding Head
Roman Bronze Attachment - Lioness Holding Head
Item Details
Description
Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A mold-made bronze attachment of a lioness holding in one paw a human head. The lioness snarls, triumphant. Is this a reference to one of the bestiarii, a gladiator who fought against lions? Or is this perhaps a reference to a Gorgon's head? Whatever its meaning, it would have been a striking decoration for whatever it was attached to - possibly a piece of furniture or a chariot. Size: 2.25" W x 2" H (5.7 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Prominent LA County collector who acquired these prior to 2000
