A well preserved exemplar of van der Aa's superb map of the south and southeast of what is now the United States, from New Mexico and Texas to Chesapeake Bay, the whole surrounded by a decorative printed "picture-frame" border. A lovely cartouche showing a Native American couple and "local" flora and fauna (including a lion) adds to the map's great appeal.

Pieter van der Aa (1569-1733) was a Dutch publisher best known for preparing maps and atlases, though he also printed pirated editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated volumes. He also printed many maps that were often out of print, which he reissued.
