Item Details
Description
Ancient Greece, Athens, ca. early 5th century BCE. A lovely black-figure kylix (drinking cup) with finely shaped twin squared-off handles, a wide, evenly sloping bowl, and a delicate round foot joined to the body by a short neck - sides A and B painted with a similar scene featuring a bearded satyr (left) interacting with a maenad (right) in silhouette, flanked by a pair of palmettes. The underside of the concave base features a dotted circle makers mark characteristic of Attic ware. Size: 8.125" W handlespan x 3" H (20.6 cm x 7.6 cm)

The Lancut Group refers to a group of Athenian black-figure vase-painters whose names are unknown. Beazley named them the Lancut Group after a skyphos in the Potocki Collection, Lancut (Poland). According to scholars, they may have been connected with members of the Haimon Group, and vases have been attributed to them on the basis of style.

A black-figure skyphos attributed to the Lancut Group sold for $5,313 (3,500 GBP) at Christie's, London - Sale 5487, April 29, 2010, Lot 44. See http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/an-attic-black-figure-skyphos-attributed-to-the-5310718-details.aspx
