Description
Ancient Greece, Athens, ca. 500 to 400 BCE. A lovely red-figure skyphos painted in the manner of the F.B. (Fat Boy as most of his figures are short and pudgy) painter, depicting an athlete on Side A, standing in composite profile, donning a long chiton (toga) and sandals, holding a strigil in his left hand, and tossing a ball in his right hand. Side B depicts a woman in profile, donning a long peplos and head covering, standing in profile with her arms crossed before her. A fine example of the skyphos form, a drinking vessel upon a low foot with two short, horizontal handles, expertly built and painted. Size: 10.5" W x 5.25" H (26.7 cm x 13.3 cm)
