MID-ATLANTIC SIGNED AND DATED FLAX HACKLES / HATCHELS, LOT OF TWO, each board style, small example with punched decoration and "D+C 1823" to sides, and dovetailed-box cover, large example punched "J M 1848" to edge, nailed-box cover inscribed "Made by Levi (possibly Baker) / ? 1848" to interior. First half 19th century. 12 1/4" x 3 1/4" and 17" x 4 1/4".
Very good condition with expected wear, small cover with later painted decoration.
Provenance: From a West Virginia private collection.
Catalogue Note: Inscription on large cover possibly for Levi Baker (1808-1888), a farmer and carpenter born in Hampshire Co., Virginia (now West Virginia).
