Description
Salvador Dali (Spanish, 1904-1989) "Velazquez" (From the "Spanish Immortals" Series) Original Framed Etching Signed in Plate - This piece is an original etching by famous surrealist painter Salvador Dali. The piece is titled "Velazquez", and is part of the "Spanish Immortals" series. In the early 1960s, a Swiss publisher commissioned Dali to create a print edition celebrating five real and imagined figures who loom large in the Spanish cultural imagination. The collection was called "The Five Spanish Immortals", and it works depicting Cervantes, Europe’s first great novelist and his unforgettable protagonist, Don Quixote. The series also paid homage to the medieval hero El Cid, the master painter El Greco, and Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez, the subject of this particular piece and someone The Met calls “the most admired—perhaps the greatest—European painter who ever lived”. The piece has been professionally framed, and has authentication from "Societe de Verification de la Nouvelle Gravure Internationale New York and Paris" affixed verso. The piece (including the frame) measures approx. 17" x 13.5", and is in excellent condition.
