Item Details
Description
Salvador Dali (Spanish, 1904-1989) "Woman With Guitar" (From the Apollinaire Suite) Original Etching Hand Signed & Numbered 101/145 in Exhibit Quality Frame From the Collection of Pierre Argillet W/COA - This magnificent specimen is an original etching titled "Woman With Guitar", by Surrealist artist Salvador Dali, from his "Apollinaire" suite. Dali's initial plan for the suite was to illustrate a number of songs by Georges Brassens, shown with his guitar on the first etchings, singing the feminine body. However, the singer’s agent recommended so many changes that Dali shifted themes, and turned the suite into a military ground. Seeing a correlation in the plates with the 1914-1918 war, Pierre Argillet suggested that Dali illustrate instead the “Poemes Secrets” by Apollinaire. This piece is hand signed by Dali, and numbered 101/145. The etching has been professionally framed in an exhibit quality frame, and is in beautiful condition. This piece comes from the collection of Pierre Argillet, publisher, avid collector of Surrealist art, and lifetime friend of Salvador Dali. This is the first time this collection has been offered at auction, and a once in a lifetime chance to own an one of the finest works by one of the most fascinating artists of the Surrealist movement. The piece measures approx. 15" x 11", and will come with a certificate of authenticity from the Museum of Surrealism in Melun, France (Pierre Argillet's former home "Chateau Vaux-le-Penil" and former museum). Pierre Argillet was a famous art collector and publisher, who was an avid collector of work by Futurists, Dadaists, and Surrealists. Argillet very early on met the major artists of the 20th century, and when he met Salvador Dali, complicity led to a life-long friendship that lasted until the painter’s death in 1989. They has a long and fruitful collaboration, producing nearly 200 etchings. This piece was personally owned by Argillet, and demonstrates high standards of quality, and the impassioned collaboration between an artist and his publisher. A diverse and multi-talented artist, Dali is considered one of the most collected artists today, and his works offer an incredible opportunity for enormous appreciation in value. Salvador Dali was born in 1904, in Figueres, Spain. From an early age he was encouraged to practice his art and would eventually go on to study at an academy in Madrid. In the 1920s, he went to Paris and began interacting with artists such as Picasso, Magritte and Miro, which led to Dali's first Surrealist phase. There is no denying that Salvador Dali is one of the most famous, and much appreciated artists of the 20th century. His works are housed in private collections, museums worldwide, including the Salvador Dali Museum in Cleveland, Ohio and St. Petersburg, Florida and his Teatro-Museo Dali in Figueras, Spain.
