Description
Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A stunning bronze cast aryballos of a nearly perfect spherical form with a short neck, and carinated rim with a gorgeous, lustrous seafoam green patina. Such a vessel would have been used to store unguents, perfumes, or fragrant oils used in a lady's toilette. Comes with an informative gallery text panel. Size: 2.5" in diameter x 3" H (6.4 cm x 7.6 cm)
According to the accompanying gallery text, "There is an example in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford and the type is also known in pottery with an example in the Elliot-Smith collection." The text also points to an "identical example" in "Greek, Etruscan and Roman Bronzes in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston" by Comstock and Vermeule (1971) No. 480 also see "Greek, Roman and Related Metalware in The Royal Ontario Museum," pp. 93, fig. 147 (illustrated).
Provenance: private York, England collection acquired on London Art Market, ex-private Suffolk collection formed in the 1980s
