Description
Six well listed American Artist signed 1932 limited edition Etchings. William Auerbach-Levy (1889-1964), Earl Horter (1880-1940), Walter Ernest Tittle (1883-1966), Ernest David Roth (1879-1964), Sears Gallagher (1869-1955) and Ralph Boyer (1879-1952). This group of six etchings were all included in the 1932 Bicentennial Pageant of George Washington, (also called “The Life of George Washington"). All full sheets measure approximately 15"x19.50". The marketing for the portfolio read: “The American Art Foundation has the honor to announce Twenty Masterpieces in Etching each executed by one of America’s most distinguished artists.” Originally commissioned by private investors, each artist was asked to complete a piece relating to George Washington, his private and public life. The respective artist signed each print in the portfolio at the time of issue, and the entire set bears those original signatures. The book which was edited by John Taylor Arms; 1932; printed in England by Henry E. Carling on laid paper with watermarks “GW” (George Washington's monogram) and an eagle and shield coat of arms handmade at Head Mill, Maidstone, England and published by the American Art Foundation in an edition of 1000 (plus 20 artists’ proofs). 1- William Auerbach-Levy (1889-1964) 'A Virginia Garden' depicts the courtship of Martha Washington and George Washington strolling through a private garden in Virginia. It is signed in pencil, lower right by the artist. 2- Earl Horter (1880-1940) 'Washington at Braddock's Defeat'. It is signed in pencil, lower right by the artist. 3- Walter Ernest Tittle (1883- 1966) 'Lady Washington's Levee' t is signed in pencil, lower right by the artist. 4- Ernest David Roth (1879-1964) 'A vestryman of Pohick Church' It is signed in pencil, center by the artist. 5- Sears Gallagher (1869-1955) 'Fort Le Boeuf'. It is signed in pencil, lower left by the artist. 6- Ralph Boyer (1879-1952) 'The First American Army'. It is signed in pencil, lower right by the artist.
