Description
A Monumental American Solid Sterling Silver Francis I Punch Bowl with gilt wash interior. This magnificent punch bowl by Reed and Barton of Taunton, Mass. holds 4 gallons of punch for entertaining on a grand scale. The bowl is fully marked with Reed and Barton’s maker’s mark, sterling standard mark, pattern #RS321. The bowl is of circular bombe form, raised on a circular pedestal foot, the rim of the bowl and foot are applied with a cast and chased ornate scrolled foliage border. The central decorations of ornate repousse fruit filled cornucopias and chased with foliate scroll work, no monograms. Measures approximately 15.50"x15.50"x11.25" tall. Weight is approximately 12 pds 3 oz. An American Classic, Francis 1st by Reed & Barton continues to be as popular today as it was when it was introduced in 1908. The grandeur of this unique sterling silver pattern, designed by Ernest Meyers, is enhanced by its fifteen different fruit-and-flower clusters. The Francis I pattern was introduced in 1908, after 3 years of design work by Ernest Meyer. His goal was to emulate the design work of a chief court artist and sculptor for King Francis I of France, Benvenuto Cellini. The pattern is in the Renaissance-Baroque styling, displaying 15 fruit and flower designs, paying tribute to Francis 1st throne entrance in the year 1515. Francis I pattern by Reed & Barton has been one of the most recognized and collected patterns. Known as the pattern of presidents and princes, in fact Eisenhower, Truman and Wilson were among the many leaders who collected this very pattern.
