Description

OHIO SPONGE-DECORATED YELLOWWARE SEATED SPANIEL DOORSTOP, cobalt blue, facing right, open front legs, tail curled to rear, punched eyes and nostrils, on a shaped base featuring trefoils and shells across the front, five vent holes under base. East Liverpool, probably Vodrey Brothers. Circa 1855. 9 1/2" H, 5" x 7 7/8" base.
Undamaged.
Literature: See Richmond - Equal in Goodness: Ohio Decorative Arts 1788-1860, p. 73, fig. 115 for a left-facing example with Rockingham glaze.
Provenance: Property of a Wisconsin lady.
