Description
Glazed Redware Spaniel Doorstop, Pennsylvania origin, second half 19th century, molded figure of a spaniel with hand-incised details to face, paws, and locket, the figure seated on an octagonal base heavily-decorated with impressed circles. Surface decorated with light manganese highlights and covered in a heavy lead glaze. Underside incised "WD" along with an illegible pencil notation. Similar figures were produced by potter, George Diehl, in Philadelphia circa 1870. Hole in ankle of one front foot. Glaze wear and a shallow chip to base. Glazed wear to head, including a chip to one ear. Other minor flecks of glaze loss to body. 1 1/4" x 3/4" shallow flake off of underside. Some additional shallow chips to bottom edge, primarily visible on underside. H 8".
