Description
This lot consists of a large framed portrait of Henry Clay, founder of the Whig Party and politician during the late 1800s. He is depicted in a black suit coat, that almost has a velvet feel to it, with a white vest and collard shirt, and black ascot. From the manner in which the artist portrayed the Clay, with a solemn look, as if he is moments away from breaking down, and the clothing that he wears, he could be in mourning. The figure is seated in front of a dark background and framed in a large ornately carved wooden gilt frame. On the lower left of the painting, it appears that the artist signed the image along with dating it. Unfortunately it appears that this has faded over time and the only legible part is the date, presumably 1845. Overall the painting is in good condition with craquelure present and normal wear. The frame also displays wear, along with cracks and some areas deficient of ornamentation. It also appears that the frame has been restored at least once.Condition: (Very Good - Excellent).Dimensions: Framed: 31" x 37".
