Figures Overlooking an Extensive View of Montreal Circa 1830 Oil on panel Size: 18 x 12 in (45.70 x 30.50 cm) The Notre Dame Basilica, built between 1824-1829, is visible in the centre of the cityscape. The early steamship known as a "composite ship" (with sails and steam both) appears to sail on thedistant St. Lawrence River. The businessman John Molson, founder of Molson Breweries, was instrumental in bringing the widespread use of the steamship to the St. Lawrence. In 1822, he founded the St. Lawrence Steamboat Company whichprospered throughout the 1820s. A growing influx of immigrants, the increased demand for lumber, and the general upsurge of economic activity gave impetus to shipping on the St. Lawrence, helping to spur the rapid growth of the city of Montrealduring this period. James D. Duncan taught drawing at several Montreal schools during his career. He was a founding member of the Montreal Society of Artists in 1847.
