Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. early 19th century CE. A collection of six bronze "opium weights", each of a different size, and each in the form of a hintha bird. Animal-shaped weights were a charming tool used to weigh not just opium but any item that needed to be weighed - food, raw materials, and metals. After the British occupied Burma in 1885, they introduced flat, round iron weights that replaced these whimsical bronze ones. The hintha is a mythical chicken-like beast, here elaborately portrayed with large crests, tail feathers, and beaks. All are displayed together on a custom stand. Size of largest: 1.35" L x 2" W x 2.45" H (3.4 cm x 5.1 cm x 6.2 cm); size on stand: 13.2 L x 3.15" H (33.5 cm x 8 cm).
