Item Details

Description

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A hefty cast leaded-bronze weight in the form of a frog with a loop handle / projection arching over its body. Animal-shaped weights were a charming tool used to weigh not just opium but any item that needed to be weighed - food, raw materials, and metals. After the British occupied Burma in 1885, they introduced flat, round iron weights, but whimsical examples persisted as collectable figurines. The frog form is a rarer example and very cute as well! Size: 2.5" L x 1.75" W x 3.25" H (6.4 cm x 4.4 cm x 8.3 cm); weight: 725 grams
