Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. 19th century CE. A collection of 5 bronze scale weights in the form of stylized zoomorphic creatures standing atop bases- 3 birds and 2 four-legged rabbit or ungulate creatures. Animal-shaped weights were a charming tool used to weigh not just opium but any item that needed to be weighed - food, raw materials, and metals. After the British occupied Burma in 1885, they introduced flat, round iron weights, but whimsical examples persisted as collectable figurines. Size of largest: 0.75" L x 0.75" W x 1" H (1.9 cm x 1.9 cm x 2.5 cm)
Provenance: private Charlotte, North Carolina, USA collection; ex-Joel Malter collection, prior to 2004
