Description
Greece, Attica, Athens, ca. after 449 BCE. AR drachm (4.21 g) Obverse: Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with three laurel leaves and vine scroll. Reverse: owl standing right, head facing; olive sprig behind; all within incuse square. Well centered and boldly struck with attractive dark toning. A rare coin in this denomination! Kroll 10. HGC 4, 1631. Size: 0.58" W (1.5 cm)
The owl is a symbol of Athena, and is often shown accompanying her; Athena, of course, was the goddess of the city, and so the owl became a symbol of Athens and its government. The olive tree, as well, relates to Athens. Athena and Poseidon were said to have quarreled over the city of Athens and Athena planted an olive tree on the Acropolis to show that it belonged to her. Herodotus records that, although the Persians burned all of the Acropolis, the remains of the olive tree sprouted a new branch the very next day.
