Description
New World, Spanish Colonial, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A heavy cast silver container for holding incense during Catholic Mass. The form is similar to many salt cellars from the same time period, boat-shaped and standing on a diminutive round foot, attached with a thin leg. The lid is flat aside from a deep valley in its center and the hinge for opening one side of it. Lightly incised, abstract vine-like motifs decorate the lid and the body.
