Description
This vessel has quite the form.
Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Calima, El Bolo, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. An enormous globular redware vessel (almost 20 inches tall!) supported by four standing male Atlantean figural legs, the form boasting a tall, narrow spout resolving in a slightly flared rim. Nice remaining red slip on the upper shoulder and spout. Quite impressive for its form as well as its iconographical content. Size: 8.5" in diameter x 19.75" H (21.6 cm x 50.2 cm)
One of the striking elements of this vessel is the exaggeratedly long neck, though the atlantid legs are equally mesmerizing - clearly inspired by the anthropomorphized architectural supports that originally held up the roofs of temples or other highly revered structures in the Pre-Columbian world - the most famous being the Colossal Atlantids (ca. 700 CE) of the Aztec Toltec culture, which for all we know may have been inspired by pieces like this example. The dignified figures wear caplike helmets or coiffures, bodywear or armor that includes massive shoulder protectors, and large ear ornaments - clearly meriting the status of a warrior.
Provenance: private Atlanta, Georgia, uSa collection
