Description
VERMONT, 1864-1956 A fine oil on canvas portrait painting of a young African American girl by illustrator and realist George Timothy Tobin. Titled "Phyllis", the young girl is depicted in a short sleeve green sweater with white collar and grey skirt. She is seated while holding an orange against her lips partially concealing her coy smile. Tobin was a founding member of the New Rochelle Art Association. The work is signed in the lower left corner "George T. Tobin" and signed and titled on the verso with Tobin's address "18 Prospect St, St. Albans, VT." Truly one of the artist's greatest works to come to light. One of six works in the sale from the Artist's private collection given directly to his great grand niece. Painting measures 22" by 14 1/2", overall with frame 27" by 20"
