Description
This is an elegant and refined wood sculpture from the Senufo peoples, Cote de Ivorie, West Africa. A tall slender female with incised linear designs and a solid base. The designs have ritual meaning and notably the parallel lines that radiate horizontally and vertically out from the navel at its center are Known as kunoodyaadye, which translates as 'navel of mother' or 'mother of twins,' this design is used to ornament the body of Senufo women at puberty. and references the Senufo creation myth and to the role of women as the givers of life and the guarantors of social continuity. This example measures 31.5 inches tall and appears to be a very good vintage example.
