Item Details
Description

Details: This lot consists of a cased set of United States Military epaulettes. These items are from circa 1860.

The epaulettes are of gold bullion and brocade with a crescent shaped metal accent on the shoulder side. They are adorned by a gold colored button, showing eagle with shield on breast and arrows and branch in talons, on the neck side, two silver bullion Captain rank bars nailed to the center, and circular regimental insignia, with silver bullion trim and a stamped metal "2" on blue field, nailed to the shoulder side. The bottoms are of red velvet and leather with a brass bar and hook for attachment both of which are marked with the appropriate side for wear, "LEFT" and "RIGHT". The epaulettes measure approximately 7.5" in length, 2.5" in width at the neck side and 5.6" at the shoulder, with bullion fringe 3" long.

The case itself is black-painted metal and has a raised platform and wire frame inside for resting the epaulettes on. The lid bears a plaque reading "JAMES S. SMITH MANUFACTURER OF MILITARY GOODS" and a label reading "JAMES S. SMITH & SONS. MANUFACTURERS OF AND DEALERS IN MILITARY GOODS 126 GRAND ST BROOKS BUILDING 3 DOORS FROM BROADWAY MANUFACTORY NO. 15 DUTCH ST. NEW YORK". There is a handle on the top of the lid and a lock hook on the side of the hinged lid. The case measures 9" W x 5.5" H x 6.5" D.

This lot is from the estate of a well-known and well-respected lifetime Civil War collector in Upstate New York. Worth Auctions will feature scores of antique firearms, edged weapons, paintings, and unusual items. A selection of post-1898 firearms by major manufacturers will also be featured.

Condition / Notes: These items show a typical range of normal period wear, age and handling which may include patina, abrasions, rust and soiling. The epaulettes are in excellent condition, exceptionally clean and brilliant bullion, and minimal to no bending or stretching to the bullion coil fringe. The case has substantial abrasions to the black paint and is missing the hinged tab part of the latch but closes nicely with a tight fitting hinged lid.
