Description
Southeast Asia, Thailand, Rattanakosin Period, 17th century CE. An ornate, heavy, seated figure of a Buddha, cast in bronze and heavily gilded. The Buddha has the classic elements of Thai artwork from this period, when the region was ruled by one of the most powerful kingdoms in its history. Buddhas are shown seated on ornate pedestals and decorated heavily. This particular Buddha wears a beautiful costume with flowered details that are echoed in his throne, which has been cast to look like it has rich fabric. The remains of the pottery mold used to create the hollow figure can be seen inside of the base. Size: 4" L x 7.5" W x 10.05" H (10.2 cm x 19 cm x 25.5 cm)
Buddha sits with legs crossed, a serene look on his face, his hands forming the Bhumisparsa Mudra, the "earth witness", one of the most iconic poses of Buddhism. His left palm is upright in his lap and his right hand reaches down past his robes - here depicted in a lifelike and flowing manner - to touch the earth. This mudra comes from the story of Buddha asking Prthivi, the spirit of the earth, to witness his enlightenment when he was threatened by the king demon, Mara.
