JOHNSON'S IMPEACHMENT AND THE PRICE OF GOLD
Interesting A.L.S. of stockbroker D. H. Wood, 2pp. 8vo., New York, Jan. 12, 1867 to powerful Pennsylvania congressman Adam J. Glossbrenner. In part: "…The 'Herald' of this morning says that the President will certainly be impeached. Can this be so?…Gold is strong at 134 but will go lower if affairs are quiet in Wash'n City…". At the time, the 14th Amendment was being put to a vote by the various states, and Johnson was at odds with his party and most of Congress.
