Description
(Andrew Johnson) 17th President. The Impeachment of Andrew Johnson occurred in 1868, when the United States House of Representatives adopted eleven articles of impeachment. The House's primary charge against Johnson was with violation of the Tenure of Office Act, passed by Congress the previous year. Specifically, he had removed Edwin McMasters Stanton, the Secretary of War from office. Thirty-six "guilty" votes were required to remove Johnson from office. On all three occasions, 35 Senators voted "guilty" and 19 "non-guilty". As the Constitution requires a two-thirds majority for conviction in impeachment trials, Johnson was acquitted. 5” x 3” ticket for the gallery for the Impeachment proceedings, May 11, 1868, the stub has been removed but is present.
