Description
PHINEAS T. BARNUM
(1810 - 1891) American showman who opened his circus, "The Greatest Show On Earth", merged with James Bailey to form Barnum and Bailey Circus. A.D.S. "P. T. Barnum", 1p. 12mo., New York, Nov. 18, 1857, his certification that he has given John Greenwood, Jr., assisstant manager of Barnum's American Museum in New York, a power off attorney with: "...the full authority to transfer one hundred and fifty shares of the Capital Stock of the Naugatuck Rail Road Company to any third party...". Greenwood was a valued Barnum employee often send abroad to employ freaks and other "exhibits" for Barnum's shows. The letter is mounted to the front pastedown of Barnum's "Life of P. T. Barnum", [New York: Redfield], 1855, apparently a first edition. Presumably, this was Greenwood's own copy, and it contains various clippings tipped in documenting the showman's career up to his death, with a great illustrated clipping for his New York museum, complete with bearded lady. The book has faults, including some foxed pages at front and back, worn spine ends and cover corners, etc., still very good.
