Description
1905/06 AMES EXPERIMENTAL SABER
Rare Ames Model 1905/06 saber, blade length 32", 36 1/2" long overall. The unusual grip is covered in gray shark skin and wrapped in wire which remains taut, the basket is black painted steel. The steel blade is marked "A.S. CO." with their logo and "1906" with the opposite side marked: "U.S.". Small areas of the grip are worn, else very good. The M1905/06 Experimental was intended as a one-fits-all sword for all branches, officers and enlisted. Only 1,315 with lengths of 34", 32", 30", and 27" were fielded for testing, 1,039 of which were produced under contract with Ames. The steel furniture was produced at the Springfield Armory and provided to Ames, and it appears that Ames imported the blades, based on that of the M1902, from Solingen.
