NOTE:
The present work was originally owned by a Norwegian collector in the 1930s as evidenced by a photograph which has been found in the archive of the Vaering photography firm in Oslo. The photograph may have been taken in 1933 in conjunction with the Thaulow commemorative exhibition at the House of Artists (Kunstnernes Hus) in Oslo. There is a painting listed in that catalogue with nearly identical dimensions titled From Otta, 1904 which belonged to a private individual. Thaulow was living in Paris between 1898-1906. In the autumn of 1904 he returned to Norway to paint a few pictures from his native land. He visited Otta, a small tourist community in the Northern part of Gudbrandsdalen, and from his hotel there he rode his bicycle to reach a bridge over the Otta River. This bridge, now rebuilt, can be seen in some of the paintings (T. Refsum, Gudbrandsdalen og malerne, Oslo, 1948, pp. 57, 156). Thaulow painted approximately ten pictures from this bridge and three of them depict aged trees leaning precariously toward the swiftly flowing river. In the present work one such tree has been trimmed down by a woodcutter, who is seen moving toward the background. We are grateful to Vidar Poulsson for confirming the authenticity of this lot and providing this catalogue note.Â
