Description
First half of the 19th century. American mixed wood cupboard. Upper shelved section with scalloped frieze & side supports upon cupboard. Three short drawers above pair of flat-panel doors. Shaped base & turned Feet.74 1/2" H X 47 3/8" W X 18 1/4" D. Provenance: Property from Enfield House, Cheraw, South Carolina. The Enfield House in Cheraw, South Carolina, was built sometime between 1815 and 1820 by General Erasmus Powe after his return from the War of 1812, where he commanded the 9th Brigade of the South Carolina militia. Powe, a prominent citizen of Cheraw, was responsible for recruiting volunteers to fight in the War of 1812.During the Civil War, this house was used as headquarters for the Union general O. O. Howard, while another of Powe's homes on the same street was used as General Sherman's personal sleeping quarters. The Enfield house was occupied by Dr. J. J. Wilson for years, which resulted in the nickname of Wilsonia for the surrounding area at the turn of the 20th century. The home sustained damage from both a major fire and the Charleston
