1860s Carte De Visite Photograph of Union Navy Civil War Admiral John A. Dahlgren, aka the "Father of American Naval Ordnance." This great period photograph measures about 2.25" x 3.5" on its original Card Mount of overall size is 2.5" x 4". This bust portrait was taken sometime after February 1863 when Dahlgren was promoted to the rank Rear Admiral in the United States Navy. This Portrait of Civil War Navy Admiral John Dahlgren is in excellent condition, the focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich. Both the Photo and the Card Mount are clean and crisp with sharp corners and no significant wear being nice for display.
John Adolphus Bernard Dahlgren (November 13, 1809 " July 12, 1870) was a United States Navy leader. He headed the Union Navy's ordnance department during the American Civil War and designed several different kinds of guns and cannons that were considered part of the reason the Union won the war. For these achievements, Dahlgren became known as the "father of American naval ordnance." He reached the rank of rear admiral.
