Description
ANNA MARY ROBERTSON 'GRANDMA MOSES' (American 1860-1961) A PAINTING, "So Restful," AUGUST 16, 1946, oil and tempera on pressed wood board, verso a paper label with offset lithograph portrait of the artist, "Anna Mary Robertson Moses, Eagle Bridge, N.Y., Born Sept. 6, 1860, Date of Painting: Aug. 16, 1946, Number of Painting: 1130, Title: So rest full," and a rubber stamp, "Reproduction Rights to this painting expressly reserved by Galerie St. Etienne 46 West 57th St, New York City;" 10" x 14", framed 20" x 24". Note: Catalogue raisonné: Otto Kallir, Grandma Moses, No. 619, N.Y.: Harry N. Abrams, Inc. 1973. "The Galerie St. Etienne developed a commitment to the work of self-taught American and European artists after “discovering” Grandma Moses, who had her first one-person show there in 1940. The gallery has represented Moses ever since...The Galerie St. Etienne, founded by Otto Kallir, a Viennese emigré, specialized in modern Austrian masters... Kallir, like many of the pioneers who championed modernism in the pivotal decades between the two world wars, was also interested in the work of self-taught painters....In 1946, Kallir edited the first monograph on the artist, Grandma Moses: American Primitive, and oversaw the licensing of the first Moses Christmas cards. Both projects proved so successful that the following year the book was reprinted and the greeting card license taken over by Hallmark."- Special thank you and acknowledgment to Galerie Etienne.
