Description
TURNER JAMES ERNEST: (1909-1975) British Mystery Writer, associated with Borley Rectory, famous as 'the most haunted house in England'. Small series of two A.Ls.S. and a T.L.S., James Turner, five pages (total), 8vo and 4to, Suffolk, 13th June 1956 - 27th August 1958, all to John Howarth. Turner writes to the autograph collector and makes several references to his books, in part, 'I am flattered to be added to so eminent a collection. I am much more pleased with your kind remarks about 'The Strange Little Snakes' & glad you liked it. The next will be out next January, I believe & is called 'The Frontiers of Death', though I have a non-fiction book 'The Dolphins Skin' coming out….Yes, the jackets are well done, I think & do give some idea of what to expect inside.' (13th June 1956), 'It may interest you to know that I have a straight novel coming out next January, called 'The Deeper Malady' - it has undertones of mystery & a new thriller, called 'The Dark Index'….' (21st August 1958), 'I quite agree with you about CHEAP editions. These so-called 'action-thrillers' on American lines are getting a bit too much….I fancy that the editors of these cheap editions take a great deal of notice of such readers as yourself….The same goes for the B.B.C. and adaptations of books (not mine in particular), they pay a lot of attention to the reader who troubles to write and say what he would like to hear' (27th August 1958). One of the letters is accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Turner. Together with a vintage signed 4 x 6 photograph of Turner seated outdoors in a three quarter length pose smoking a pipe and with an open book on his lap. Signed in blue fountain pen ink to a clear area of the image. VG, 4
