The book comprises journalistic photographs of world events (with a heavy emphasis on war), printed in high-quality gravure, one per page. The Gernsheims provide factual information about each scene and rarely credit the photographers, as the source for most of the pictures were news agencies and archives. Among the events depicted are President Lincoln's second inauguration (1865), the opening of the Suez Canal (1869), the first long-distance telephone call (1883), Queen Victoria's funeral (1901), the departure of the Titanic (1912), the creation of the League of Nations (1920), and the explosion of the Hindenburg blimp (1937). Corners bumped, in a lightly edge worn dustjacket.
