NAVY PHOTOGRAPH USS KEARSARGE AIRCRAFT CARRIER : Official U.S. Navy photograph depicting the USS Kearsarge CV-33, and Essex-class aircraft carrier, May, 29, 1949. The photograph illustrates the ship in Port-au-Prince Haiti in the act of being manned and completing a 21-gun salute in honor of President Leon Dumarsais Estime (1900 - 1953) of Haiti. In the back-ground the president’s yacht can be seen passing. Verso with full documentation of this historical record, archivally framed and with a copy of the back of the photo on the back of the frame. Framed: 21.5”h x 25.5”w. USS Kearsarge CV-33 had a long and distinguished career with the US Navy. She was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers completed during or shortly after World War II for the United States Navy. Kearsarge was commissioned in March 1946. Modernized in the early 1950s as an attack carrier (CVA), she served in the Korean War, for which she earned two battle stars. In the late 1950s she was further modified to become an anti-submarine carrier (CVS). Kearsarge was the recovery ship for the last two manned Project Mercury space missions in 1962–1963. She completed her career serving in the Vietnam War, earning five battle stars.
