BINDING: 11.75”h x 9.25”w, front and rear cover not attached.NOTES: With multiple engraved plates and a fold out map detailing the flora, fauna and the journey. With a hand-written note on the front page dated 21, June 1834 which reads, “…. Has taken the liberty of having the enclosed for the ---- of the Lord of Muenster and with do himself the ---- of waiting on His Lordship on Monday morning before -------- East London on Water Works Office.”
3 separate book plates: 1.) Earl of Munster and Col. Fitz Clarence overlapping a plate with the image of initials surrounded by the Royal garter bearing the motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense" (which means "Shame on him who thinks ill of it") surmounted by a crown We believe this refers to William Henry, Prince of Brunswick-Luneburg (1765-1837). 3rd son of George III. Afterwards Duke of Clarence, and subsequently WILLIAM IV, King of Great Britain who obtained the Royal Order of the garter in 1801.PROVENANCE: From the treasured mahogany bookshelves of a second-generation bibliophile specializing in history and travel literature.
