Description
In 2011 the Smithsonian Institute and the University of Florida announced the discovery of a bone fragment, approximately 13,000 years old that was discovered in Indian River County Florida. This engraving is the oldest and only known example of Ice Age art to depict a proboscidean in the America. The fossil bone is a fragment from a long bone of a large mammal, most likely a mammoth or mastodon, or less likely a giant sloth.
This is one of only 8 casts made by the Smithsonian Institute of the found artifact. One of the casts are now part of an exhibit at the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville. It measures 15" long by 4" wide.
The bone was discovered by a local Vero Beach fossil hunter, James Kennedy. This casting is from his private collection.
