Like the first-class reporter that he was, Taylor went to all the interesting places, the gold mines, San Francisco, Monterey, Sacramento and other towns and cities as they were springing up at incredible speed, talked with everyone he could find who could tell him something interesting, and had, himself, most of the experiences of a typical Forty-niner. (Wheat). This work is probably the outstanding book on the early gold rush in California. The author's description of the Constitutional Convention at Monterey is the best we have, as are also the views he gives us of the earliest mining camps.
