Description
"Eugenia" Dorothea Vaughan Hunt Holcombe (b. July 12, 1811 Dinwiddie, Virginia d.Feb 12, 1873 Marshall Texas). Painted by H.A. Tatum (Columbus, Texas, b.1816, active circa 1860). Written on verso "Presented to Mrs. E.D. Holcombe by her particular friend the portrait artist H.A. Tatum." Eugenia was born in Dinwiddie, Virginia and she was educated in Nashville Tennessee at Philip S. Fall. She married Mr. Beverly La Fayette Holcombe on July 2, 1829 and the two settled in Marshall, Texas at the families Plantation “Wyalucing”, formerly the trans Mississippi Department of the Confederate States of America Headquarters and post office during the civil war. Eugenia and Beverly would go on to have five children, the second of which was Lucy Hunt Holcombe who married Ambassador to Russia Francis Wilkinson Pickens Governor of South Carolina from 1860-1862. Pickens is considered one of South Carolina’s most influential figures during this period, while Lucy was known as the Queen of the Confederacy and the fairest lady of the south. Lucy would give birth to her only child, Francis Eugenia Olganeva Pickens, in Russia. Francis was the God child of Czar Alexander II and Czarina Marie, who would give her the name “Douschka” which mean little darling. The portrait is an excellent rendering of an important Southern lady of the period. Good overall condition. The panting has been relined at some point. Surface with some crazing. Left hand side of the painting 4 1/4" from the frame having an old tear which was properly repaired and conserved this does not run into the figure of the woman and only affects to background of the image. At the upper right hand side of the image there is also a 2" repair which has been restored and conserved. Featured in the publication “Leaves From A Family Album” (Holcombe & Greer) p. 53.
