"Nova Totius Terrarum Sive Novi Orbis Tabula" Framed Colored Engraved 17th C. World Map by Willem Janszoon Blaeu - This interesting piece is an early world map created by Willem Janszoon Blaeu. The map includes equestrian portraits of 10 royal figures across the top, including Louis XIV and Anna Maria. The piece also has a vignette of Pope Innocent XI in the center, who was in power from 1676-1689, which is when it is believed that Blaeu first created the map. Throughout the map are also various decorated cartouches, with interesting notations in Latin. There are also exquisite illustrations of sailing ships, various sea creatures, and mythological scenes. This map is a stunning chance to view an important time during the history of the world in great detail, and it's many splendorous drawings and colors make it an conversation piece or an excellent gift for any historian. The map has been framed in a cherry colored wood frame. The piece (including the frame) measures 57"W x 41"H. Please note: the frame does not include glass, there is a small, approx. 1.5" puncture on the right side of the map near the "Mar Di" however it does not affect any of the more important parts of the map. Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638) was a Dutch cartographer and atlas maker. He made country maps and world globes, and in 1633 he was appointed map-maker of the Dutch East India Company. He was one of the notable representatives of the Netherlandish/Dutch school of cartography in its golden age during the 16th and 17th centuries.
