(8vo) original light blue cloth, pictorial cover label embellished with metallic silver and green ink; pictorial endpapers in black and orange; color pictorial dust jacket. First Edition, First State.
The rare dust jacket has the same illustration as the cover label, with the same use of metallic inks. On the rear panel are listed advertisements for five Baum titles (The Road to Oz; The Land of Oz; Ozma of Oz; Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz; and John Dough and the Cherub). The book is in first state with advertisement on verso of ownership leaf listing titles through John Dough and the Cherub. The binding features the elaborate cover label showing a number of characters traveling through the city, spine lettered in black with picture of a rabbit in black and silver. The striking use of metallic ink on the illustrations and cover label can only be found in this state. Bienvenue & Schmidt, p. 47.
