Very Rare “Robert Morris” Signed Letter As The Acting Continental Congress Superintendent Of Finance in 1783
ROBERT MORRIS, Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Philadelphia, served as Superintendent of Finance for the Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War from 1781-1784.
July 21, 1783-Dated, Manuscript Letter Signed, “Rob.(ert) Morris” (as Treasurer for the Continental Congress) measuring 9.25 x 7.5"; Office of Finance, Display Framed, Very Fine. This being an acknowledgment for the receipt of a communication by Benjamin Harwood Esq., as the Receiver of United States fiscal instruments for the State of Maryland. This Letter has been laid down on heavier card stock for display. It has fold lines with some fine splits in the letter sheet alone the folds. An tiny old museum tag with “63” is adhered in upper left corner. This Letter is boldly signed by Morris in rich deep brown, his distinctive signature measuring a large 2.5” across. This Letter is also accompanied with a period engraving of Robert Morris. Professionally matted and archivally framed under Plexiglas together with a vintage Engraving of Robert Morris by J.B. Longacre, measuring fully to 26” tall x 16” wide. The Letter is regarding a future meeting and reads, in full:
“Office of Finance 21st July 1783. - Sir, - I am to acknowledge the Receipt of your Favor of the eighteenth Instant -- I am Sir, Your most Obedient & Humble Servant -- Robt. Morris”
Any Letter Signed by Robert Morris while in the official position as the Acting Continental Congress Superintendent Of Finance is exceedingly rare! This being the sole example we have offered. Ex: EAHA Auction, May 16, 2009 lot 87 where it sold for $2,124.
