Item Details
Description
Bronze with lacquer gilding, Tibet. 18th cent.

Amitayus is a special form of the great Buddha Amitabha who rules over the western spheres. This bronze depicts him sitting in vajrasana on a lotus throne with his hands folded on his lap and his characteristic vase with the amrta elixir of life, or nectar of immortality, in his hands. Amitayus is wearing the large, fivepointed crown of a transcendent Buddha, behind which is a tall chignon with a flaming pearl on top of it. Typical for Amitayus is also the abundant jewellery on his ears, over his chest and on his arms. These details, as well as the puckering of the robe and the string of lotus leaves, are beautiful and precise in their execution. Both his crown and his serious face are gilded. Completely preserved; patina. That the nectar vase is also preserved is a rarity!
