Description
Fire-gilded bronze, Tibeto-Mongolian. ca. 18th to 19th cent.
A “White Tara” goddess, regarded as a bodhisattva in Buddhism, sitting in vajrasana on a lotus throne. She is particularly highly adored as a titulary patron in Mongolia. She has one hand held low in varada, the gesture of wish granting, while the other holds a lotus and has its fingers in the form of demon defense. Decorative necklace over her bare chest, collier, jewelry on her ears, arms etc. On her head she wears a multi-pointed crown with pearl strings and a chignon. In addition to her two natural eyes, the seven-eyed Sitatara depicted here has eyes on its hands, the soles of its feet and forehead. They are an expression of the highest wisdom, since she sees all things and nothing escapes her. Hair tied together, garland shawl, nicely executed lotus blossom. Completely preserved, heavy bronze of high quality casting and reworking; entirely gilded with a partial patina. Good condition.
