Plate 1 of DeKay’s Crustacea is shown as it appears in nature. Accompanying close-up images highlight the skillful hand-coloring used to capture the natural appearance of each. The Zoology of New York or The New York Fauna was a five-volume set published 1842-44. It faithfully recorded beautiful and original illustrations of plants, animals, fish, birds, reptiles mollusks and crustaceans. Of the entire print run, only 300 special sets were set aside to have the plates hand-rendered.
