1842 James DeKay hand-colored engraving of Snakes. 1 of only 300 published examples. The Copperhead (fig. 18) and Northern Rattlesnake (fig. 19) are shown as they appear in nature. The close-up images reveal how the renderings have been done with painstaking care to capture the natural colorings of each. The Zoology of New York or The New York Fauna, by James E. De Kay, was a five-volume set published 1842-44.
